Fear the Gear's 2013 Strandbeest was a great success in the 4th of July parade, beating its previous record and making it past the corner of Van Doren before breaking! This year's Beest had a total of twelve legs, constructed from PVC, and took only two people to operate. Special thanks to Dana, Fear the Gear alumna, and Nick and Tang Tang for their help building the Beest and in the parade.
Fear the Gear is psyched for September.. let the official season begin! The game release is on 9/10- we'll also be running a few informative workshops at the kickoff, which is taking place at Livingston High School.
Coming up soon after, on 9/18, Fear the Gear is participating in MakerFaire in Queens, NY: a total geekfest featuring hackers, makers, crafters, DIYers, and the like. If you have the opportunity, stop by! Interested in forming or joining a robotics team next year? Fear the Gear is honored to be hosting the SCURRY UP SCRIMMAGE on June 25th from 8:30-3PM at the local Lafayette Elementary School. Definitely stop by to see some postseason robots running, and learn more about what it takes to be an FTC team. We're pumped, and it's shaping up to be a great day!
Our "Get Over It" competitive season is over, but the team has still been keeping plenty busy. We volunteered at SBS, a local elementary school, for the last couple months, helping the kids out with the LEGO robotics after school enrichment program. Little kids + LEGOS = chaos... well, can't blame 'em, that's how we started out!
We're also prepping to host our very own outreach event on June 25th. Cross your fingers for the best! And last, but not least, we're campaigning to introduce our team to the high school. Our experiences in FIRST have been so enriching, so inspiring- and we want to share that with our community. Stay tuned for more updates, and don't forget to check out our Facebook, which is updated much more frequently! "Get Over It" is challenging Fear the Gear- just as we like it! It's tough to see where the season is going just yet, but we are surely eager to make progress.
By the same token, Fear the Gear is actively searching for new members. If you are interested/have a suggestion, contact us, perhaps? Update: We have been informed that the practice date has been moved from this Saturday to next Saturday, October 16. We hope no one was misinformed because of this erroneous blog post! We're all psyched for the '10-'11 season. Tomorrow, a small crew of Fear the Gear reps are going to be presenting at NJIT- as well as attending the available workshops. Be sure to hear Michael, Calvin, and Dana's thoughts on working with Lexan, the Motivate award, and the last season in general! If you guys have any questions for us, always feel free to ask them here!
We're keeping in mind what we need to improve on in order to have a successful season... This past Saturday, we participated in an Outreach Program hosted by Pope John. It was great to see a lot of interested new kids. The turnout was phenomenal, but we specifically mentored a handful of kids. We let them drive our robot around, and answered their questions. Oh yeah, and for the last time, there was some friendly, sentimental competition between the 09/10 Hot Shot Robots.
